You receive this error message because Outlook 2013 and later versions have a default attachment size limit of 20 megabytes (20480 KB) for Internet email accounts. This limit prevents your computer from continually trying to upload very large attachments that exceed the limits of most Internet service providers. This limit applies whether you are adding one large attachment that is greater than 20 megabytes (MB) or several attachments whose sum total size is greater than 20 MB.
If you are using an Exchange Server mailbox, you receive this error message (by default) if you attach one or more items to a message, and if the sum total of the attachments is greater than 10 MB (10240 KB). This attachment limit is not related to the limit in Outlook for Internet email accounts. This limit for an Exchange mailbox stems from the Maximum send size setting that is configured in the Transport Settings Properties dialog box by the Exchange administrator (Refer the following screenshot).
Fix: The attachment size exceeds the allowable limit on Outlook 2016 2013
Value type: DWORDValue name: MaximumAttachmentSizeValue data: An integer that specifies the total maximum allowable attachment size. For example, specify 30720 (Decimal) to configure a 30-MB limit.
If you are using an Exchange Server account, the 20-MB attachment limit for Internet email accounts is not used by Outlook. Instead, Outlook uses the limit that is configured on your Exchange server. To modify the setting that is used to control the size of a message that is sent through an Exchange Server account, follow these steps.
You can change the maximum attachment size limit in Outlook only through the registry. There is no such option in the Outlook GUI. var quads_screen_width = document.body.clientWidth;if ( quads_screen_width >= 1140 ) if ( quads_screen_width >= 1024 && quads_screen_width = 768 && quads_screen_width
Another option is to use a third party product like Attach2Cloud, this product allows uploading to OneDrive, SharePoint or Teams the attachments directly from inside Outlook in a few seconds through a very easy-to-use control center. The limit of the attachment size is then the limit of the size of the cloud service (which is huge and could be 250GB for OneDrive by example! )And the mail that goes through the servers is only a few kb only as the attachments are links to the cloud service.
Outlook limits the size of files you can send. This limit prevents your computer from continually trying to upload very large attachments that exceed the limits of most Internet service providers. For Internet email account. such as Outlook.com or Gmail, the combined file size limit is 20 megabytes (MB) and for Exchange accounts (business email), the default combined file size limit is 10 MB.
When you compress, or zip, your file, it decreases its size, and it might decrease it enough to fit within the Outlook size limits for attachments. The following articles describe how to compress and extract files for different Windows operating systems.
The attachment size limit, or actually message size limit as it includes all your attachments and the message itself, is determined by the sending size limit configuration of the mail server that you are using.
Theoretically, there is a limitation to the amount of data a person can be sent via an email. But in practices, most email services provide limit the size of attachments that are transmitted through their serves and email clients.
The good thing Outlook is that it allows you to increase the size of email attachment size limit. All those changes can be performed by editing entries related to Outlook from Windows Registry. So, put on your geek mode. If your email server supports large attachments (if you are sending through these self-hosted email services), here are the steps you need to follow to increase Outlook attachment size limit:
c) In that branch, find and edit the value of Maximum Attachment Size by specifying your preferred attachment size limit. For instance, if you wanted to have the new limit as 100MB, you will edit the figure to 104200. Change the value to 0 if you want to effectively disable the email attachment limit in your Outlook.
WinZip Express will compress your attachment into a Zip file and automatically upload it to the cloud. Then, it will replace the attachment with an efficient download link. This will help you bypass any email attachment size limits that you might deal with. Not to mention it provides extra security by using encryption.
You can access the Use Cloud Services menu to determine which cloud services should be used when dealing with large attachments. As soon as you hit Send, WinZip Express will check to see if the attachment exceeds the default size limit. If the size is below that, it will apply compression to it and upload the file to the previously selected cloud storage. Finally, it will replace the attachment with an elegant download link.
To protect mailbox databases from uncontrolled growth due to massive use of mail attachments, Microsoft Exchange 2019/2016/2013/2010/2007 incorporates a special set of message size limits in its configuration.
Managing mail flow in Exchange Server plays a vital role in effective database management. Heavy attachments in emails cause data to pile up and consume extra storage space. However, as a solution to this issue, it is possible to set email size limits within Exchange Server using Exchange Management Shell and Exchange Admin Center. But before that users should plan or consider some aspects related to the message size limits.
The message size and attachment size for messages should be set to appropriate limits, for successful mail delivery to happen. But its not advisable to increase the message size unnecessarily, as it will end up overloading the server.
If the old-type ANSI data file is in use please consider importing this .pst in the new profile. The old type data file has "Outlook Data File (97-2002)" in the format of the file. If the value of the MaxFileSize registry entry ever exceeds the ANSI 2 gigabyte (GB) limit on either the .pst or the .ost files, the value will be ignored to limit the size to 2 GB to prevent corruption.
To change the attachment size limitation in Microsoft Outlook, you have to modify the parameter of MaximumAttachmentSize in the Registry Editor. And you can do it with following steps.
Step 5: Double click the new DWORD to open the Edit DWORD (32-bit) Value dialog box, check the Decimal option, enter the attachment size limitation in the Value data box, and click the OK button. See screenshot below:
After changing the attachment size limitation in the Registry Editor window, attachments will be inserted successfully only if their sizes are less than attachment size limitation. See the following screenshot:
With above method to increase attachment size is a little complex, but if you have Kutools for Outlook -- a handy Outlook add-in, you can change the attachment limited size as you need in few clicks.
2. In the Options dialog, click Other tab, and enter the limited size you want to change to into the textbox besides Maximum Attachment Size section. For instance, here I change the attachment size to 10MB (10240KB). See screenshot:
Attaching a large file that exceeds the size limit set by your mail server is one of the most frequent reasons why Outlook is not sending emails from Outbox. When this occurs, you have two alternatives - either to delete it or move to the Drafts folder and then re-size or remove the attachment.
Alternatively, you can create an Outlook rule that defers sending messages with large attachments. Of course, this won't solve the problem completely, but will give you time to cancel sending an e-mail that exceeds the size limit set by your email provider and help to avoid the problem.

Email was never meant to be instant, so if emails or even returned emails do not come back immediately, it is neither uncommon nor an issue. It seems the attachment size for the receiving server is hard set for their security reasons so you would just need to know the size limit. Perhaps you can compress the file to be under that limit. 2ff7e9595c
