Homes D Honor Epub Reader: A Simple and Powerful Application for eBooks

A Reading System that does not support the Media Type of a given Publication Resource MUSTtraverse the fallback chain until it has identified at least one supported PublicationResource to be used in place of the unsupported resource. If the Reading System supportsmultiple Publication Resources in the fallback chain, it MAY select the resource to usebased on specific properties of that resource, otherwise it SHOULD honor the Author's preferred fallback order. If a Reading System doesnot support any resource in the fallback chain, it MUST alert the reader that content couldnot be displayed.

For example, URLs like :12345/ or :12345/ honor these properties. But URLs like :12345/path/to.epub/,file:///path/to.epub#path=/, or jar:file:/path/to.epub!/EPUB/do not (parsing the URL string ".." with these three examples as base wouldreturn :12345/path/, file:///path/, and a parsingerror, respectively). It is the responsibility of the reading system to assign a URL to theroot directory that complies with the properties defined above.

Although the epub:type attribute is similar in nature to the roleattribute [html], the attributes serve different purposes. The values of theepub:type attribute do not enhance access through assistive technologies likescreen readers as they do not map to the accessibility APIs used by these technologies. Thismeans that adding epub:type values to semantically neutral elements like [html]div and span does not make them any more accessible to assistive technologies. Only ARIAroles influence how assistive technologies understand such elements.

For content consumers (readers), we have developed a bookmarklet for modern browsers (desktop or mobile). And, if you are a Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari for Mac user, you can install the dotepub extension in your browser.

The epub format works for most e-readers, such as Android, iPhone, iPad, Nook, Sony, Adobe Digital Editions, desktop and laptop computers, among others. But not Kindles! Kindles use either the azw3 or mobi format.

There are a number free reader apps. Purely for reading epubs, Adobe Digital Editions has a slick interface. Calibre is a more comprehensive option which allows for converting to other formats. There are also a Sony Reader app and a Nook-for-PC app. These might be of interest if you also have one of those devices for purposes of syncing. Kindle-for-PC reads mobis but is not recommended.
